Nurturing Excellence Together

  1. Year 6 English Curriculum

Year 6 Writing & English Curriculum

At Grange we have daily English lessons which are based on the National Curriculum (September 2014) requirements combined with quality and engaging text. Our nonfiction units are cross curricular focusing on topics children are learning in other areas of the curriculum.

The curriculum has been devised by senior leaders to ensure pupils are exposed to a wide range of genre, stories and poetry during their time at Grange. The daily lessons also include explicit teaching of grammar and punctuation and may also include drama and performing. Whilst handwriting and spelling are taught explicitly in additional lessons pupils are expected to have neat handwriting and correct spelling in their daily English lessons. Pupils are encouraged to use adventurous vocabulary in their work which they find themselves during their reading.

You will see here the medium term plans for each half term and the pupil learning wall – their targets for the expected standard by the end of the year. Each half term pupils complete an unaided writing assessment where they are given the opportunity to show off all the skills they have learnt during the term. You can also see examples and extracts of pupils’ work by selecting ‘Our Work’, from the Quick Links section on the school website homepage.
